Generations of use have given the wood extraordinary variation in tone, from warm honey brown to deep, almost charcoal areas of oxidation and wear.

Of particular interest are the early metal corner reinforcements—wonderful examples of the practical “make-do” repairs often found on utilitarian country objects—and an incised or burned ownership or maker's mark to one exterior side. Rather than diminishing the piece, these details reveal a history of prolonged use and preservation.

At 32 inches wide and nearly 20 inches deep, its unusually generous proportions give it considerable presence. It would be superb centered on a large kitchen island filled with seasonal fruit, on a dining table with pots of herbs and garden cuttings, or used on a bar to hold bottles and linens. Equally compelling left completely empty, where the hand-worked construction and centuries-old surface become the decoration.
