Dating to approximately 1880 and attributed to England, this antique cherry side / work table retains unusually visible evidence of its traditional hand construction, including irregular hand-cut dovetails and pronounced period saw and tool marks on the drawer components, rear board, and secondary surfaces.
The compact form is especially practical: two drawers and two working drop leaves allow it to shift easily between a slim footprint and a generous work surface. Slender bobbin-turned legs give the table a light, graceful stance while the construction itself remains notably solid and sturdy. With the leaves lowered, it works beautifully as a side or occasional table; raised, they provide substantial additional surface for writing, sewing, display, or everyday use.
One of my favorite features of this table is the cherry itself. After approximately 145 years, the wood has developed wonderful natural variation in tone, grain, and patina. Rather than trying to make the surface look new, the historic finish and the character it has acquired over time have been intentionally preserved.
DoveTale's conservation work focused on preservation rather than renovation. The table was thoroughly hand-cleaned throughout, including the drawer interiors, drawer bottoms, and accessible secondary surfaces, without stripping or sanding away the historic surface. Period saw and tool marks were deliberately left visible, and a light protective wax was applied. The original aged metal drawer pulls and drop-leaf hinges remain in place, retaining the surface oxidation and patina acquired over generations of use.
Condition Notes
Good antique condition with age-appropriate evidence of use. The left drop leaf retains several dark, roughly circular surface marks, along with a few small dings and scratches consistent with long use. One drawer interior has a visible pen scribble. These cosmetic marks remain following thorough cleaning and have been left in place rather than aggressively removed from the historic surface.
A split to the left drop-leaf support brace was conservatively repaired using period-appropriate hide glue. All original components, including the fixed wooden pin, were retained; no original material or hardware was removed or replaced during the repair.
This table has been preserved, not made new, allowing its early construction, historic surface, and long service to remain legible.
