Signed by Benj. Owen; an English clockmaker active 1694-1740, completed his apprenticeship in 1695.
Having an elaborate brass face with silvered dial signed Benj. Owen London. Face features Gilt Foliate corner spandrels with Cherubs. Scrolled broken pediment with 3 flame finials. Orignal glass side panels offer a view of the mechanical innards of the clock. Glass window panel is also original, opening to provide access to the dial. An enamel moon in a sky of stars tracks the phases of the moon. Tape was added by a previous owner to dampen and alter the sound if its chime.
As of now, the clock does wind and does function perfectly, though it is not guaranteed to continue.
Provenance: From the estate of Gov. Thomas W. Veasey, the 24th Governer of Maryland from 1836 to 1839. Descended through the Veasey/Grauer families.
