Hand-knotted in wool and originating circa 1950-1959 from Afghanistan, this 3x5 vintage Gabbeh rug joins Rug & Kilim’s Vintage collection. Showcasing expressive folk storytelling, it depicts a tiger in profile set against an undyed taupe field framed by a micro-rosette floral border.
On the Design:
In nomadic weaving traditions, tiger iconography holds a revered position, historically symbolizing royal power, fierce guardianship, and spiritual defense across ancient trade routes. Curated with uninhibited folk art spontaneity, Gabbeh pictorials offer a captivating window into the weaver's personal imagination, translating legendary animal lore through bold graphic simplification. Rural artisans created these textiles without rigid workshop templates, relying on memory, ancestral symbols, and immediate observation to capture wild fauna. In regional lore, the open textured field reflects the vast, unpaved landscape of high-altitude habitats, while feline subjects were prized as hearth rugs meant to bestow strength and protection upon the home. The execution preserves the raw, unpretentious spirit of original village looms, transforming functional tribal craft into a monumental piece of abstract folk art that honors centuries of regional weaving heritage.
Posed horizontally across an open, abrash-softened taupe-gray field, a grand tiger figure strides dynamically across the canvas in rich chocolate-brown wool. The coat is rendered with expressive golden-yellow and ivory tiger stripes across its body, complemented by a white underbelly, sturdy limbs, a curved tail, and detailed facial features that impart a spirited, living character. Framing the central figure is a dark espresso border filled with a continuous chain of micro-rosettes and vine motifs dyed in vibrant shades of terracotta, ochre, teal blue, and cream. Bounded by an inner guard line and simple selvedge edges, this harmonious interplay of saturated earth tones, playful figurative forms, and generous negative space provides designers with an irresistible accent piece to introduce narrative warmth, historic character, and graphic charm into entryways, private studies, or curated modern living spaces. The accompanying book, World Interior by Alberto Pinto, is part of Volumes by Rug & Kilim. The book (SKU - B116) can be acquired independently through our bookstore.
