Pair of Japanese Meiji Miniature Gold Maki-e Lacquer Takatsuki Stands
A finely executed pair of miniature Japanese takatsuki pedestal dishes dating to the Meiji period, circa 1890–1912. Each measures only 1 inch high by 1.5 inches in diameter, yet displays the detailed lacquer workmanship normally associated with substantially larger ceremonial objects.
Known in Japan as takatsuki, this elevated form traditionally served to present seasonal sweets, fruit, mochi, and other delicacies during formal dining or ceremonial observances. At this exceptionally small scale, the pair was created as a precise miniature representation of Japanese ceremonial tableware, probably forming part of a larger miniature dining or presentation ensemble.
Each stand comprises a shallow circular dish raised upon a slender baluster-form stem and broad domed foot. The black lacquer ground is densely decorated in gold hiramaki-e with butterflies dispersed among continuous scrolling vines and foliage. The decoration extends across the interiors, exterior rims, stems, and bases, demonstrating considerable precision and control at such a reduced scale.
Butterflies in Japanese decorative art are associated with transformation, joy, and longevity; paired butterflies may also signify marital harmony. The continuous karakusa vine scroll represents vitality, continuity, and enduring prosperity. Together, these auspicious motifs were particularly appropriate for objects connected with formal presentation and celebration.
The plain black undersides provide a restrained contrast to the richly ornamented surfaces. These refined miniature stands may be displayed independently or alongside other Japanese lacquer ceremonial objects.
Dimensions: Each measures 1 inch high by 1.5 inches in diameter.
