An elaborate Renaissance Revival ormolu inkwell attributed to the distinguished New York firm of Edward F. Caldwell & Co., circa 1900. Apparently unmarked, the attribution is based on the substantial construction, detailed casting, and sophisticated combination of Classical and Renaissance Revival ornament associated with Caldwell’s luxury desk accessories and decorative metalwork.

The rectangular body is richly decorated with pierced foliate scrollwork, floral rosettes, and a series of boldly modeled bearded wind masks. Such masks represent the personified winds and were frequently incorporated into Renaissance and later Beaux-Arts ornament to suggest movement, atmospheric force, and the power of nature. The masks are surrounded by dense scrolling vines that reinforce the themes of growth, abundance, and regeneration.

The projecting corners are guarded by fantastical sphinx-like figures. Combining human and animal characteristics, these hybrid creatures traditionally signify wisdom, strength, and protection. Their elongated bodies form the structural corners of the inkwell and terminate in scrolling supports.

The hinged domed cover is pierced with additional foliage and flower heads and surmounted by a double-faced Janus-form finial. In Roman tradition, Janus governed beginnings, transitions, and the passage of time—an appropriate emblem for an object associated with writing, correspondence, and official transactions.

Four projecting forked branches serve as pen rests, allowing several dip pens to be arranged around the central well. The cover opens to reveal its removable glass ink reservoir, which remains intact and complete. Functional as an inkwell, it may also be displayed as a sculptural desk, library, or study accessory.

Warm, softly aged gilt surface with expected wear, oxidation, and minor variations consistent with age and use.

Dimensions: 4.5 in. high × 8 in. wide × 10 in. deep.

Condition
Good antique condition with age-appropriate wear, surface patina, oxidation to underside, and loss of original interior ink insert. Presents exceptionally well with strong sculptural detail and rich gilt finish. See less
