A wonderfully romantic antique French carnet de notes, or miniature memorandum book, found in France and dating approximately to the late 19th or early 20th century.
This petite notebook is encased in beautifully detailed silver-tone metal covers, each side completely different. One side is decorated in raised relief with scrolling ornament and delicate flowers, while the reverse features an especially beautiful botanical study of thistles.
The carnet retains its original tiny pencil, held neatly along the side in its fitted metal holder, as well as its original paper pages.
Even more charming are the handwritten inscriptions and scribbled notes left inside by a former owner, including a dated birthday remembrance and other little personal notations. We have left these untouched as part of the history and character of the piece.
A small suspension ring at the top would originally have allowed the carnet to be carried from a chain, ribbon or chatelaine, keeping one’s notes and pencil conveniently at hand.
These miniature personal objects belonged to a wonderfully elegant era when even the most practical everyday necessities were made beautiful.
No visible hallmark. Exact metal composition is unknown and it is therefore described conservatively as silver-tone metal.
Good antique condition with age appropriate patina, tarnishing, surface wear and signs of use. The original paper naturally shows age, handwriting, marks and wear. Original pencil remains present. Please examine photographs closely as they form part of the description.
