An exceptional and rare Edwardian solid sterling silver double horse hoof desk stand, expertly crafted into a luxury double inkwell and central candlestick (taperstick). Dating to circa 1913–1914, this magnificent piece of equestrian novelty taxidermy and "Objects of Vertu" is a quintessential artifact of late-Victorian and Edwardian country house life.
The stand features two meticulously preserved, highly polished real horse hooves, mounted with heavy sterling silver collars and structural under-rims. Joining the two hooves is a beautifully cast, ornate foliate branch that sweeps upward into a central baluster-form candle nozzle, designed to hold a wax taper for melting letter-sealing wax.
A masterpiece of craftsmanship by the renowned firm Robert Stewart of Glasgow, this piece features complete, crisp, matching sets of official British hallmarks on both the upper and lower silver components.
