Attributed to Italian Sculptor Valentino Besarel (1829-1902), this surround is intricately carved with a dentil cornice above a front panel carved with birds, scrolling leaves, and tendrils. The jambs are carved as an opposite pair of muscular Atlas-like supporters which show an example of "contrapposto", an Italian word meaning shifting of the body weight or standing with most of the weight on one foot. The mantel would be disassembled into 3 sections for transport purposes and then re-assembled upon or after delivery.. See less
