A French Restauration (Charles X period) weather instrument, circa 1820-1840, in the classic lyre-form case: carved and gessoed giltwood with gilt composition corner mounts, rosettes and floral swags, a hexagonal dial surround, and a comparative thermometer set into the lyre strings. The "Selon Toricelli" paper dial with the seven-term French weather scale is signed by the retailer, Binda, optician at Verdun. Mercury siphon barometer.
Original water gilding, worn through to the red bole and bare gesso on the high points; not regilded. Composition ornament complete.
