Large wheel-thrown studio pottery bowl, signed "Hughes" on the base, c. 1980s.
A bold three-part swirl in the cream clay body sweeps around the interior, reserved with wax resist beneath a softly sprayed slate-blue glaze. The airbrushed glaze shades from deep blue-gray to lighter tones, so the forms appear to rotate. The motif recalls the Japanese mitsudomoe, a three-comma crest, and gives the piece a strong graphic, modernist presence. Fine throwing rings are visible through the glaze in the well.
At 17" across, it's a true statement piece. Use it as a centerpiece on a dining table, console, or coffee table, or display it upright on a plate stand as wall-style art.
