An exceptional French Charles X period figural mantel clock, circa 1825, finely executed in richly gilded ormolu and contrasting patinated … Read more An exceptional French Charles X period figural mantel clock, circa 1825, finely executed in richly gilded ormolu and contrasting patinated bronze, featuring an imposing seated classical warrior or mythological figure, possibly Tiresias.

The finely modeled bearded figure is depicted in classical drapery, holding a staff in one hand and a dark patinated vessel in the other. A grouping of military attributes, including a shield, quiver, and weaponry, rests beside him.

The circular etched steel clock dial features Roman numerals and is surrounded by an elaborately cast gilt-bronze serpent-form bezel, framed by classical laurel and foliate ornamentation.

The rectangular base is decorated with an intricate gilt-bronze bas-relief frieze depicting classical figures in a dramatic narrative scene. The composition rests upon a lotus-leaf-molded plinth with contrasting dark patinated bronze elements and finely cast bracket feet.

The exceptional sculptural quality, intricate casting, and striking contrast between the matte and polished gilded surfaces exemplify the sophisticated craftsmanship and classical revival aesthetic of French decorative arts during the reign of Charles X (1824–1830).

The clock retains its traditional mechanical movement, with the works stamped 8 453 3017. See less
