An impressive French Empire/Restoration period figural mantel clock, circa 1830, executed in patinated and gilt bronze and mounted upon a substantial Verde Antico marble base.
The sculptural composition depicts the classical figures Apollo and Diana, seated above the circular clock dial, with Apollo holding a gilt torch. The silvered dial is surrounded by an elaborate gilt-bronze zodiac bezel. The stepped green marble base is enriched with finely cast gilt-bronze acanthus and anthemion borders and raised on boldly scrolled foliate feet.
The clock is fitted with a traditional French striking movement. A documented example of this model is described as having a silvered dial signed “A. Me Jacob & Lavieille aîné à Paris” and a movement striking on a bell.
