Titled “Malachite Beads Buffalo,” this handcrafted gourd vessel by Janet Reed Koed of Ritual Baskets, Santa Barbara, California features a stylized hand-painted buffalo in rich red, turquoise-blue, yellow and black and is accompanied by the original maker/business card. The abstract animal is accented by geometric and symbolic imagery, including a star/sun motif and directional forms.

The gourd opening is finished with a coiled natural-fiber rim accented by malachite beads, adding dimensional detail to the Southwestern-inspired design. The combination of natural gourd, fiber work and hand-painted decoration gives the piece a wonderful late-20th-century Southwestern studio craft and folk-art character.

The reverse has been intentionally left largely undecorated, allowing the natural coloration, mottling and surface characteristics of the dried gourd to remain visible.
