Historical Context
Dishes of this shaped form, copying English and Continental silver and creamware models, were made in vast quantities at Jingdezhen during the Qianlong period for export through Canton, where they formed part of extensive blue and white dinner services for the European and American markets. The combination of birds on rockwork with peony and prunus was among the most popular patterns of the 1760s, and the brown-dressed rim is a characteristic finishing touch of the period.
