The richly detailed botanical composition features peonies, iris and assorted flowering plants painted in shades of white, burgundy, blue, yellow and deep green against a luminous gold-toned ground. The artist’s calligraphic signature and red seal appear at the lower right.

The screen retains its original reverse label reading “Hand made and Painted in Kyoto Japan,” along with its original Iohara Collection of Kakejiku and Byobu certificate.

The certificate identifies the artist as Hiyakuho Imayasu, noting that he studied art at the Korin School and that his work had appeared in public exhibitions throughout Japan for 40 years.

According to the certificate, works in the Iohara Collection were limited editions painted by member artists of the Kyoto Screen Association. The certificate specifically attests that the pictures are genuine hand-painted works and that no printing, decals or molds were used in their creation.

This example is individually identified on the certificate as No. 49/200 and retains the associated artist and collection seals.

The certificate also provides history of the Iohara Collection, noting that Iohara Seijudo of Kyoto had preserved the beauty of Japan through kakejiku (hanging scrolls) and byobu (folding screens) since 1896.

A highly decorative and beautifully documented example of vintage Japanese craftsmanship. The screen’s compact scale makes it especially versatile—it can be displayed fully extended as wall art above a console or credenza, or partially folded and used as a traditional freestanding screen.

Acquired from a West Palm Beach, Florida estate auction.
