Each plate is exceptionally thin and delicately formed in the Japanese eggshell porcelain tradition, with finely detailed polychrome decoration and gilt accents. The intricate painted designs combine traditional Japanese decorative motifs with the refined, lightweight porcelain body characteristic of fine Japanese export wares produced around the turn of the 20th century.

The decoration is associated with the Kutani tradition, known for richly colored enamel painting on porcelain. The extremely thin porcelain body gives the plates an elegant translucency and remarkable delicacy.

A particularly appealing feature of this group is the survival of nine matching antique examples, making them suitable for display as a collection or for use as an unusual dessert or luncheon service.
