Realistically modeled with a broad chest, muscular body, substantial paws and a characteristically wrinkled face, the bulldog has wonderful presence and personality.
The glass eyes are a particularly striking feature, giving the face a lifelike expression. The terracotta is finely textured throughout to suggest the dog's short coat, with detailed modeling extending across the head, body and legs.
Around his neck is a buckle collar hung with a series of gilt bells – so in keeping with an English bulldog.
The underside bears the impressed model number 744, together with a circular impressed mark.
A substantial and highly decorative example of a late Victorian English terracotta animal model.
