Grand pair of vintage gilt-metal candelabras with an exuberant composition of sculptural birds, scrolling branches, leaves, and floral ornament.
Dimensional birds perch at the crown of each candelabra beneath a classical fleur-de-lis-style finial, while tiers of curling metal branches extend outward to support multiple candle plates. Applied botanical details continue throughout the structure, terminating in an open scrolling base that gives the substantial pair an unexpectedly airy silhouette.
The gold-tone finish has developed extensive variation with rubbing, darkened areas, spotting, and gilt loss throughout, softening the elaborate metalwork and giving the pair a distinctly aged Old World character.
Unusually versatile in presentation, the candelabras stand independently for use on a large mantel, console, or sideboard. Their relatively shallow profile also allows them to be positioned against a wall for a more architectural presentation.
At 21 inches high and 17.5 inches wide each, the matched pair has considerable scale and creates dramatic symmetry when displayed together.
Unmarked; maker unknown. Sold as a pair.
