Precise, sculptural, and a collector's item, this table alarm clock is the optic model by joe colombo for the italian company alessi, in its 1988 black abs version.
its smooth black abs case features a characteristic arched shape, with a slanted screen that protects the dial from glare and allows for two reading positions. The white dial displays the minutes in numerals around the edge and the hours in dots, read through the opening of the main hand—a reading mechanism as ingenious as it is elegant. The red hand indicates the programmed alarm time, giving the dial its instantly recognizable graphic character.
joe colombo was one of the most avant-garde figures in italian design of the 1960s, dying at only 41 years old in 1971. His creations for alessi are among the most collected examples of italian table design. The optic, originally designed in 1970 and reissued in 1988, is now a sought-after piece for collectors of postmodern design and vintage alessi objects.
