This classic design features a brightly painted rooster with orange-red body and dramatic black tail feathers surrounded by green banana leaves, peonies and colorful floral details.

One of the most appealing features of this set is the individuality of the hand-painted decoration. Compare the six bowls closely and no two are exactly alike. The brushstrokes, shapes of the rooster’s sweeping black tail feathers, flowers and placement of the decorative elements vary from bowl to bowl, giving each its own character.

The decoration is applied over the glaze, and the bowls show the irregularities associated with this type of traditional production. The white glazed surfaces also have variations in thickness, coverage and tone rather than the perfectly uniform appearance of modern machine-finished tableware.

A colorful and highly decorative set for open shelving, a collected kitchen, Asian porcelain collection, or chinoiserie-inspired display.

DETAILS
• Set of 6 vintage Chinese rooster bowls
• Traditional gōngjī wǎn (公鸡碗) design
• Hand-painted porcelain
• Rooster, banana leaf, peony and floral motifs
• Overglaze painted decoration
• Each bowl varies slightly in its hand-painted details
• Each measures approximately 6” diameter × 2” deep

CONDITION
Good vintage condition with no chips.

Because the decoration is painted over the glaze, there is scattered paint loss and fading consistent with age, use and stacking. The painted flower in the center interior shows wear on several bowls, with more significant loss of the painted decoration on a few.

There are also areas along some rims where the glaze did not completely cover the pottery during manufacture, leaving small areas of the ceramic body exposed. These appear to be original manufacturing irregularities rather than later chips.

Minor shelf wear is present on the undersides, along with variations in the glaze and hand-painted decoration. See less
