An exceptional early 19th-century French gilt and chased bronze mantel clock depicting an Allegory of Astronomy and the Sciences, dating to the Empire/Restoration period, circa 1815–1830.
The elaborate sculptural composition features a seated winged allegorical figure holding a gridded tablet and stylus beside the clock case. At her side stands a finely detailed armillary sphere raised on a fluted classical column. The armillary sphere is articulated, with concentric rings that pivot independently.
The clock retains its beautifully detailed circular engine-turned guilloché dial, blued-steel hands, applied floral garland, and extensive chased gilt-bronze ornamentation. The substantial architectural base is decorated in low relief with a remarkable procession of figures and putti surrounded by attributes of astronomy, geometry and the sciences, including books, globes and mathematical instruments.
The French round movement is numbered 522 and retains its bell-striking mechanism. The backplate also bears hand-incised initials “AH.” These initials are presented as an historic workshop, assembly, service or ownership mark rather than a maker’s signature, as their precise significance has not been established.
A particularly compelling feature is the sophisticated construction of the armillary sphere, whose individual rings remain movable. The bronze throughout exhibits unusually fine casting and hand chasing, visible in the figure’s wings, hair, drapery and small scientific attributes.
An apparently identical model was catalogued by Rennes Enchères Bretagne in 2018 as a “Pendule à l’astronomie en bronze ciselé et doré,” likewise measuring 39 cm high and featuring a seated winged figure, armillary sphere on a fluted column and figural low-relief base. The Rennes example was broadly catalogued as 19th century. The present clock’s design, ornament and movement construction are consistent with French Empire/Restoration production of the first half of the 19th century.
A sophisticated and highly decorative example of French horological bronze work, combining sculpture, astronomy and the decorative arts in a single object.
Dimensions: approximately 15.25” H × 11.75” W × 6” D (38.7 × 29.8 × 15.2 cm).

The gilt-bronze surfaces retain attractive historic patina with expected areas of oxidation, discoloration and surface wear. The articulated armillary sphere remains intact and movable. The fluted column supporting the sphere has some movement at its mounting and may benefit from adjustment by a qualified conservator. Movement appears complete with bell and pendulum mechanism; [insert whether you’ve tested it and whether it runs/strikes]. No attempt has been made to polish or restore the historic gilt surfaces. Please review photographs closely as they form part of the condition description. less
