Originally sold or won as novelty prizes at country fairs, these charming flatback pieces are highly collectible snapshots of domestic life, folklore, and humor from the era.
This specific piece depicts a serene figure tucked under a high-gloss, draped blanket in a classic Victorian wood-grain painted bed. The front of the base features the hand-scripted, phonetically misspelled caption: "Come why thy love lies dreaming"—a charming factory typo of Stephen Foster’s famous 1855 song lyric, typical of German export pieces of this period.
The back features a clearly hand-impressed mold inventory number (5525), attributing it directly to the historic porcelain manufacturing hubs of the Thuringia region. See less
