charming matched pair of 19th-century hand-worked needlepoint and petit point panels depicting romantic pastoral garden scenes in the French Rococo taste.
The tall companion compositions feature elegantly dressed figures within flowering landscapes: one depicts a lady on a swing accompanied by a gentleman, while the second depicts two women gathered in a garden setting.
Worked in a beautifully muted palette of soft blue, rose, celadon green, cream and earthy brown, the scenes evoke the pastoral imagery popularized by François Boucher and the 18th-century French decorative arts.
The needlework incorporates varied textures and finely worked figural, floral and landscape details. Each textile is presented beneath glass in a coordinating olive-green painted wood frame accented with gilt detailing.
A wonderfully decorative antique pair, particularly striking hung together or flanking a cabinet, mirror or doorway.
Dimensions:
16.5” W × 30.5” H each

The framing and backing appear to postdate the textile panels.
