Lovely piece of Mexican folk art pottery from Patamban, Michoacán in the west-central portion of the country.
A region know for an artisan pottery tradition stretching back to pre-Hispanic times, the local aesthetic includes whimisical folk art motifs like this stylized swan with the finish exhibiting an iridescent sheen over darker hues of the familiar green glaze artistry of the region. Terracotta redware construction of dark-maganese-brown clay and the unique "pie crust" crimped rim are also indicative of this area's pottery. Pieces of this type date to as early as the 1930s. No maker's marks but definitively artisan-made by indigeous inhabitants of the Michoacan state.
Dimensions: 11.75"w x 8.8"d x 3"h.
Condition: Excellent near-antique condition, vibrant colors, no crazing or craquelure, 1 chip on outer rim which is not readily apparent due to dark clay hue and the wavy treatment of the pie crust edge. Will display beautifully.
