An exceptional Victorian open-back armchair constructed from mahogany and dated 1880. Its tall, architectural profile is crowned by a pedimented crest bearing a carved Old English “L” monogram. The date “1880” is carved beneath the open section of the back, giving the chair a distinctive sense of identity and documented period character.
The central back panel presents an elaborately carved botanical scene depicting a butterfly hovering beside a cluster of wildflowers. Deeply modeled blossoms, leaves, and stems rise prominently from the darker textured ground, producing a sculptural, dimensional effect. The seat continues the botanical theme with incised floral decoration arranged over a contrasting pin-punched field.
Nearly every structural element is ornamented. Repeating rosettes, pinwheels, clovers, geometric borders, triangular chip carving, scrollwork, and broad leaf motifs embellish the crest, arms, seat rail, legs, and feet. The squared front legs terminate in block feet, while the substantial arms and tall back give the chair a formal, almost ceremonial presence.
Restored in-shop while retaining the warm color, visible age, and richly detailed surface that define its late-19th-century character. The arms retain some looseness and should be handled accordingly.
