A wonderfully preserved vintage gentleman’s valet chair manufactured by Babcock-Phillips, a division of Dart Industries, in Richmond, Virginia. Dating to approximately the 1970s, this handsome American-made dressing chair combines practical function with the warm, distinctive styling of the period.
The upper valet incorporates a sculpted 18-inch wooden coat hanger designed to support a jacket without distorting its shoulders. A separate 13-inch bar across the top provides a convenient place for a tie or other clothing accessory. Below, the gracefully shaped back features a warm brown molded composite inset with a deeply textured basketweave-look pattern. Although visually reminiscent of woven cane, the decorative inset is a solid molded panel—an especially characteristic design detail of the late 1960s and 1970s.
The chair retains its original black vinyl upholstered seat, as confirmed by the original manufacturer’s upholstery tag. The gently cushioned seat features a tailored piped edge and rests above four shapely turned wooden legs. Slender black-painted metal supports provide structure while preserving the chair’s visually light, elegant profile.
A particularly charming feature is the concealed molded service tray beneath the seat. Measuring approximately 8.5 inches wide by 7 inches deep, the tray pulls forward from the center of the chair and provides a convenient place for a watch, cuff links, wallet, keys, coins or other personal effects while dressing.
The chair remains in its original configuration, including its upholstery, molded basketweave-look back panel, sculpted valet hanger, pull-out accessories tray and manufacturer’s label. Its warm walnut-toned finish, black upholstery and richly textured back create a distinguished vintage presence suitable for a bedroom, dressing room, walk-in wardrobe, gentleman’s closet or sophisticated menswear boutique.

The chair retains its original black vinyl upholstery, molded basketweave-look composite back panel, walnut-toned wood finish, black-painted metal supports, pull-out accessories tray and manufacturer’s upholstery tag. The original vinyl remains supple and presents attractively, with light surface wear and no major tears observed. The textured molded back panel appears intact, with no apparent major cracks or losses. The wooden elements display scattered scratches, finish variation, small marks and gentle patina associated with normal vintage use, most notably around the sculpted coat hanger. The pull-out tray operates and exhibits expected surface wear from use. The chair is structurally sound and ready for use.
