This is an original 1739 hand-colored mezzotint engraving from Johann Wilhelm Weinmann’s (1683–1741) Phytanthoza Iconographia, Plate 352. It is newly double-matted in muted olive-taupe conservation matboard with a narrow warm tan reveal, using archival techniques, and presented under glass in an aged gilt frame.
Phytanthoza Iconographia was one of the great botanical publishing projects of the Baroque period, ultimately illustrating thousands of plants across more than 1,000 colored plates. Weinmann was a Regensburg apothecary with his own botanical garden, and the series was notable for an innovative color-printing process that was supplemented by hand coloring.
Plate 352 gathers several cherry forms onto a single sheet, including bird cherry and cultivated flowering varieties, pairing blossoms with dark and red fruit. That mix of ornamental flowers and fruiting branches gives the plate considerably more visual range than a conventional single-specimen botanical study.
