The dial reads Gent of Leicester rather than Gents of Leicester, a variation also found on other clocks from the same maker, a naming quirk even specialist clock collectors have not fully explained.

This clock once had a job that had nothing to do with how it looks today. It was originally a slave clock, wired into a central master clock elsewhere in the building that sent out a regular electrical pulse to advance the hands by a fixed step. Gents of Leicester, founded in 1872 by John Thomas Gent, built the technology that made this possible. This particular clock now wears a warmer, more striking gold finish, an alternative to the black or copper tones usually seen on this type of clock.

The clock measures 24.5 cm in diameter and 6.5 cm in depth.
