An original g.p.o. Wall clock from the 1960s, its synchronome movement still fitted inside, the mark of one of the most respected names in british electrical timekeeping. Bakelite body, freshly finished in satin black with a gold bezel.
g.p.o. Stands for general post office, the british state body that once ran the national telephone and telegraph network alongside the postal service. From around 1910 the g.p.o. Began installing master and slave clock systems across its buildings, so that every clock in a location agreed on the time to within a couple of seconds. Clocks made for the g.p.o. Carried a manufacturer code alongside the g.p.o. Marking, and "dc" or "dca" specifically identifies a clock built by the synchronome company, commercially producing some of the most accurate electric clocks in the world at the time.
this clock still carries its original synchronome slave movement, untouched and untested. As with any true slave clock, it has no timekeeping ability of its own; it requires a pulse generator or an actual connection to a working master clock system, neither of which is included, and it will not run as received. A quartz conversion can be arranged on request before ordering.
the bakelite case carries a few small marks on the dial face, honest evidence of years spent in service. The clock measures 35 cm in diameter and 7 cm in height.
suited to collectors of british postal and telecommunications history who value an unaltered, original movement. This piece has an attribution mark,
