The lid is applied in white relief with a neoclassical scene of two draped female figures seated together at needlework, flanked by a pair of daisy-form paterae, the whole framed by Wedgwood's signature bellflower and berry border. The base retains its ceramic striker surface, still lightly textured with soot from use. Impressed Wedgwood mark to the underside.
A handsome, useful little object for the mantel or hearthside table — as ready to light tonight's fire as it was a century ago.
