Vintage Japanese Four-Panel Hand-Painted Pine Tree Screen on Silver Leaf.
Striking vintage Japanese four-panel folding screen featuring a hand-painted pine tree composition against a luminous silver-leaf ground.
The dramatic pine branches extend across the four panels, rendered in deep green and black with golden ochre branches and areas of raised, textured paint, giving the composition wonderful depth and dimension. Delicate landscape and wave-like forms appear along the lower portion of the screen.
The aged silver-leaf surface has developed a beautiful muted patina, creating shades of charcoal, pewter, silver, and soft brown that change subtly with the light. The bold pine imagery and restrained palette give the screen a distinctly Japanese aesthetic while also making it a striking decorative piece for a contemporary interior.
The reverse is covered in a repeating geometric-patterned paper, with black lacquered wood framing.
Acquired from a San Francisco auction house.
