the original, made in the southern netherlands around 1500–1525, illustrates the invention of weighing and the art of forging.

on the left, a figure holds a balance, evoking the art of weighing with weights.

on the right, tubal-cain, a biblical figure, is depicted at a forge, working metal.

the scene unfolds in a lush landscape, composed of trees, plants, flowers, and numerous animals.
the whole piece features a rich palette of brown, ochre, and gold tones, characteristic of early tapestries.

the inscription on the left reads: “giuargiiius trovva lart de paisser aus pois.”

it means: “giohargius discovered the art of weighing with weights.” the inscription on the right reads: "tebaqaih trovva lart de forger en tous metauls".

it means: "tubalcain discovered the art of forging all metals".
