Saara Hopea introduced the … Read more Beautiful set of turquoise bowls designed by Saara Hopea and made in Finland by Nuutajarvi Notsjo. Saara Hopea introduced the Nyppyla series of beaded or knobbed glass in 1952. The series was produced between 1952 and 1976. These bowls represent classic scandinavian design - simple and elegant - that blends well with both modern and traditional decor. They can be used for candles; as serving pieces - olives, candies, nuts; or to display a small plant or flowers. The larger one measures 6.75 inches wide at the lip by 3.375 tall. The smaller one measures 5.75 inches wide at the lip by 3.875 tall. The base of both is 4.5 inches.

Saara Hopea (1925 –1982), was a Finnish designer whose work included glassware and jewellery. Her pieces are on display in museums, such as the Victoria and Albert Museum, the British Museum and the MOMA.

Nuutajarvi Notsjo was established in 1793, in Urjala, Finland, by Jacob Wilhelm de Pont and Harald Furnhjelm, originally making window glass + bottles. The company changed hands several times until it was bought by the Wartsila Group in 1950. Kaj Franck was made art director, a position he held until 1976. Other designers at Nuutajarvi included Oiva Toikka, Heikki Orvola, Saara Hopea, and Runnar Engblom. Nuutajarvi merged with Iittala in 1988, and Nuutajarvi glass is currently marketed under the Iittala name. See less
