Finished in rich amber oak, this sample of quarter-sawn oak panel is distinguished by visible medullary ray figuring, warm grain, reflecting the other sensibility of of the traditional period United Kingdom design. Its surface and joinery bear the honest, gradual wear of genuine age rather than a manufactured distress, evidence of a long working life already lived. Each mark and softened edge on a piece like this is part of its history rather than a flaw to be hidden. Furnishing with antiques is a gentle form of good stewardship, letting well-built pieces continue their working life rather than ending up in a landfill. It is well suited to a material reference.
