A commanding pair of Brazilian modern armchairs produced by Novo Rumo in the 1960s, crafted from richly figured caviúna and newly upholstered in sophisticated mushroom-taupe mohair. Monumental in proportion yet distinctly playful, the design balances substantial, sofa-like comfort with an expressive exposed-wood structure.
Generously scaled seat and back cushions form a deep, inviting interior, framed by fully upholstered arms and precise piped edges. This soft architectural volume is held within bold caviúna rails, while the sculptural base culminates in dramatically curved, outward-sweeping feet. The dialogue between rectilinear upholstery and animated woodwork gives the armchairs their memorable character: grounded and robust, yet lightened by movement and wit.
The mushroom-taupe mohair was selected for its nuanced warmth and understated elegance. Its velvety surface brings depth to the broad upholstered planes, while its subtle brown and gray undertones complement the caviúna’s amber, chestnut and reddish tones. The wood has aged beautifully, developing a luminous patina that accentuates its dramatic grain and gives each frame a distinctive material richness.
Active in São Paulo during the 1960s, Novo Rumo participated in a defining period of Brazilian modernism, when furniture makers combined modern architectural principles with native hardwoods, accomplished craftsmanship and a more sensual approach to form. These armchairs are emblematic of that moment: structurally expressive, materially luxurious and designed around an increasingly informal way of living. Their sculptural silhouette, generous comfort and commanding presence make them an exceptional representation of postwar Brazilian furniture design.
