The sculptural wedge-shaped design is particularly distinctive, with gracefully curved bow fronts, tapered legs and metal-capped feet. The smaller table was purposefully designed to nest beneath the larger table, allowing the pair to function as a compact console/occasional table arrangement or to be separated and used individually.
Today’s Custom Design was established in 1981 by Jaime and Janou Perczek and became known for distinctive South American-made furniture incorporating exotic materials, including natural goatskin. The company’s own history describes its aesthetic as having similarities to Karl Springer, while Jaime Perczek became particularly associated with a sophisticated Neo-Deco vocabulary.
The original underside label remains present and reads in part “Handmade in Colombia / Exclusively for Today’s Custom Design.” Other documented Colombian designer furniture has appeared with this same Today’s Custom Design labeling, further establishing the firm’s Colombian production connections. Palm Beach Modern Auctions has also documented Today’s Custom Design furniture constructed in parchment/goatskin, wood and metal.
The creamy goatskin displays the beautiful tonal variations and organic character inherent to natural hide. Against the deep black glossy framework, it creates a sophisticated 1980s Neo-Deco / Art Deco Revival appearance suitable for both traditional and contemporary interiors.
