Diaguita Black and White Etched Three Footed Ceramic Bowl from Northern Chile
Measures 7" diameter and 2 1/4" tall.
Diaguita-style ceramic bowl featuring a distinctive black-and-white incised design. While inspired by the rich ancestral heritage of the indigenous Diaguita-Kakán peoples of Northern Chile and Northwest Argentina, this specific piece blends traditional tribal methods with modern, symbolic narrative artwork. The bowl is created using an incised or sgraffito technique. White lines are carved out against a deep black or dark-burnished clay body to reveal the contrasting scene. The interior depicts a landscape featuring stepped Mesoamerican or Andean-style pyramids under a radiant sun and a crescent moon, framed by native desert flora like prickly pear (opuntia) and saguaro-like cacti. The central landscape is encircled by multi-layered, intricate geometric patterns consisting of interlocking triangles, cross-hatching, and zigzags. These geometric optical effects are hallmarks of classic pre-Columbian Diaguita pottery.
