The sculptural elephant is … Read more A wonderfully expressive Japanese ceramic elephant planter attributed to Tashiro Shoten, dating to approximately the 1930s. The sculptural elephant is finished in an ivory crackle glaze with an upturned trunk, yellow tusks and hand-painted details, supporting an elaborately modeled jardinière decorated in deep green, black, yellow and burgundy with raised floral ornament. Extensive crazing throughout the glaze gives the piece wonderful antique character and beautifully emphasizes the modeling of the elephant. The underside bears the circular cherry-blossom Hand Painted Made in Japan mark associated with Tashiro Shoten, an especially charming example of pre- and early postwar Japanese decorative ceramics.
