:
monumental, richly carved frame in the rococo style, dating from the 19th century. The exceptionally elaborate frame features highly sculptural ornamentation with characteristic c- and s-scrolls, rocaille motifs, volutes, as well as finely rendered floral and foliate decoration. The magnificent crest is centred by a prominent rocaille with shell-like ornamentation, flanked by exuberant floral motifs.

particularly impressive are the highly sculptural corner sections with large, sweeping volutes, foliage and naturalistically rendered flowers. The finely modelled ornamentation lends the frame remarkable depth and three-dimensionality, further emphasising its grand and representative character.

the rococo ornamentation is inspired by the forms of the french louis xv style and the courtly interiors of the 18th century, which were extensively revived during the 19th century. The present frame is a particularly large-scale and decorative example of this 19th-century rococo revival.

condition:
the frame is in good but unrestored condition. The painted finish is largely preserved, with only a few minor areas of loss, and requires merely cleaning. There are two small losses to the carved ornamentation. See less
