Petite in scale at approximately three feet wide, this sophisticated desk is a particularly appealing example of the richly ornamented cabinetmaking for which Béfort Jeune and the great Parisian ébéniste tradition became celebrated.

Mathieu Béfort worked in Paris during the 19th century and belonged to an important family of cabinetmakers. Known professionally as Béfort Jeune, he specialized in luxurious revival furniture inspired by the celebrated French masters of earlier generations. His work is particularly associated with elaborate marquetry, fine veneers, gilt-bronze mounts, and sophisticated interpretations of 18th-century French furniture. Because this desk is signed Béfort Jeune, it should be presented as a work by the maker rather than merely as a piece “in the style of” his workshop.

The desk is constructed and veneered in walnut and a remarkable variety of contrasting mixed woods, skillfully selected for their differing colors, grain patterns, and tonal qualities. Its most extraordinary feature is the richly decorated top, centered by an elaborate Italianate figural scene executed in marquetry. Figures appear within a romantic architectural or landscape composition, the imagery created not through painting but through meticulously cut and fitted pieces of naturally contrasting woods. The effect is essentially a wooden mosaic, demonstrating the remarkable precision required of a master marqueteur.

Surrounding the central scene are scrolling inlaid borders and ornamental flourishes that follow the desk's elegantly shaped perimeter. A substantial gilt-bronze molding frames the top, providing a brilliant golden contrast against the warm reddish and amber tones of the veneers.

The façade is equally accomplished. Its drawers are decorated with intricate geometric cube or trompe-l'œil parquetry, creating an illusion of three-dimensional depth. The serpentine apron moves gracefully across the front, outlined and punctuated by elaborate gilt-bronze foliate mounts. Additional sculptural bronze mounts descend from the corners, emphasizing the transition from the body to the slender legs.

Four beautifully proportioned, gently curving legs give the desk its characteristic French elegance. Each terminates in a fitted gilt-bronze sabot, while the extensive bronze decoration throughout the piece lends the small desk an almost jewel-like quality.

The approximately three-foot width is especially desirable. This was never intended to have the imposing scale of a large library desk; rather, its refined proportions suggest an intimate writing table or bureau plat, suitable for a private salon, boudoir, drawing room, or personal study.

The presence of the BÉFORT JEUNE signature is particularly significant. Mathieu Béfort was an accomplished Parisian ébéniste whose furniture reflected the 19th-century French fascination with the extraordinary cabinetmaking achievements of the ancien régime. His workshop produced furniture of considerable technical sophistication, combining historical French forms with the lavish decorative tastes of the period.
