The chair features a substantial rectangular back splat framed by layered molded borders and decorated with a delicately incised bird perched among flowering branches, accompanied by a Chinese poetic inscription rendered in flowing calligraphic script.
Flanking the back are particularly distinctive openwork carved scroll supports, with scrolling foliate forms and layered relief carving that lend the chair a striking sculptural quality. The broad recessed-panel seat is framed by molded rails and supported by square legs joined by low stretchers, reflecting the robust construction and restrained architectural character of traditional Chinese furniture.
The chair retains an appealing aged surface and rich brown-red patina, with visible wear consistent with age and use. The underside and joinery reveal traditional construction and evidence of earlier repairs and stabilization.
