A large 1948 studio ceramic centerpiece by Erwin Winterhalder (1879–1968), made during his documented Cupertino, California period. The broad, shallow circular form measures 11.75 inches across and rests on five individually applied rounded feet, an unusual construction feature associated with Winterhalder's Cupertino ceramics of the late 1940s.
The handmade glazed ceramic surface is finished in a warm yellow to chartreuse ground with freely painted green and reddish-brown abstract foliate and scrolling decoration. Its expressive hand-painted treatment, low sculptural profile and distinctive five-foot construction place the work firmly within postwar California studio craft while retaining elements of Art Deco, California Modern and Organic Modern design.
Substantial enough to serve as a tabletop centerpiece, shallow bowl, charger or sculptural display object, the piece combines an unusual structural form with Winterhalder's bold decorative vocabulary from 1948.
