Hand carved natural Burlwood 19th century box from Spain. Beautiful condition with some wear, a chip on the corner bottom. Not noticeable at all when it's closed (See photos) Sadly it's not perfectly pristine, but it definitely meets the Goddess in LA very high standards. I added the antique natural coral set in sterling silver and the 2 bats. Spain has a very long history of Bat imagery in the cultural landmarks and coats of Arms. The old painting is one of the first crests created and the building is in Valencia. The impressive building is the Town Hall in Valencia. Valencia City Hall (Ajuntament de València) is a stunning 18th-to-20th-century neoclassical and baroque building located in the heart of the city at Plaça de l'Ajuntament. Last image is the Bat of Miracle Street in Valencia.
According to legend, the bat became a symbol of Valencia in the 13th century, when James I of Aragon was fighting to recapture the city from the Moors. During a siege, a group of bats flew over the city walls, inspiring the troops and leading them to victory. 4.5 x 9 inches long. Like you this is the only one.
