Each seated figure is … Read more A substantial matched pair of late nineteenth-century English Staffordshire spaniel mantel dogs, dating to circa 1860–1890. Each seated figure is formed in heavy press-moulded glazed earthenware and stands approximately 12.75 inches high, with the traditional Victorian mantel-dog profile, expressive glass eyes and surviving gilt and copper-lustre decoration.

The white-glazed bodies retain naturally aged metallic ornament, including worn copper-toned detailing around the muzzles and faded gilt accents. Their substantial construction, hand-finished surfaces and period decorative treatment give the pair the strong visual character associated with Victorian Staffordshire pottery. Each figure also retains a vent hole on the back, consistent with the documented construction of the pair.

Large in scale and weighing a combined 10.10 lb, the spaniels have considerable presence for mantel, console or fireside display. Their softly aged surfaces and traditional form work particularly well within Victorian, English Country, Traditional and Grandmillennial interiors.
