A matched facing pair of Victorian Staffordshire spaniel mantel figures dating to circa 1860–1880. Each seated dog is formed in glazed earthenware using two-part press-moulded construction and retains the characteristic vertical joining seam, small original underside firing vent and impressed numeral 4 denoting a production or size designation.
The white-glazed figures are decorated with hand-applied gold-lustre and gilt feathering, with black-painted muzzles providing strong contrast to the aged metallic ornament. Naturally diminished lustre, irregular crazing and variations in the painted decoration contribute to the period character of the pair, while the impressed size number and original firing features provide useful construction detail.
Minor irregularities around the feet are glazed over and occurred during manufacture rather than representing later damage. At six inches high, the matched pair has an appealing mantel scale suited to Victorian, Traditional English and English Country interiors.
