Very hard to … Read more Rare Vintage Mid-Century Bill Blenko Designed Art Glass Air Twist Amethyst Water Goblets/Wine Glasses- Set of 8. Very hard to find survivors of Blenko’s early years and a full set at that! These exquisite, hand-blown air twist stem goblets with their amethyst colored bowl and foot were designed by Bill Blenko. The pattern was copied from a Colonial Williamsburg glass and originally produced by Blenko (1937-1962). The defining collector characteristic of this massive, dramatic vessel is its "Air Twist" crystal stem, which is hand-formed by trapping air pockets within the hot glass column before spinning and pulling it into a rope-like spiral. Blenko Glass Co., a handmade glass manufacturer, started in 1893. Seeking to make glass using natural gas, John Blenko brought his glass maker talents from London to America and started the company. Initially, John named his company Eureka Art Glass as he had discovered a formula for a true red glass, but the name changed in the 1920s to reflect the family ownership. Known for using diverse techniques—mouth blown into wooden and metal molds, cast into a dump mold, and so on- the result of these varying techniques is over 120 years of stunning glassware creations, each with unique characteristics, bold colors and artful form. Thanks to the talent behind each Blenko creation, these items are far more than just a piece of glass. The mid-century era pieces and beyond still captivate collectors due to their rainbow of hues, sensual silhouettes and inspired designs.
