A spectacular monumental six-panel Chinese folding screen featuring an intricately hand-painted gathering of scholars, attendants and children within a lush bamboo grove. Rich shades of emerald and celadon green, ivory, muted blue and warm earth tones stand dramatically against the luminous gilt-gold ground.
Measuring an impressive 150 inches wide when fully extended, this unusually large screen creates an extraordinary focal point. It can be used as a room divider, positioned behind a sofa or bed, or displayed as a magnificent piece of wall art. The articulated panels allow the screen to be configured at varying widths and angles.
The screen retains its warm vintage character and beautifully aged gold-toned surface. Please see the condition description and detailed photographs documenting a recent horizontal abrasion on the second panel from the right.
Late 20th century. No maker’s mark observed.

The decorated front presents beautifully overall but has a horizontal abrasion measuring approximately 10 inches across the painted bamboo and gold-toned ground on the second panel from the right, with several small areas of associated surface loss. The reverse has extensive tearing, lifting and losses to its paper covering, exposing portions of the woven substrate beneath. Additional scattered wear, marks, edge losses and surface irregularities are consistent with age and use. The screen remains standing and functional as a decorative divider. All damage is documented in the photographs; professional restoration or conservation may be desired, however, it is mainly on the back. less
