Exceptional antique bowfront curio/display cabinet showcasing beautifully figured quarter-sawn tiger oak, with dramatic striped and wavy grain particularly prominent across the substantial molded cornice and front columns.
The tall center door features beautifully bowed glass, gently projecting outward at the center and tapering back toward the sides, adding dimension to the cabinet’s graceful curved profile. The door opens to a spacious interior with a mirrored back and multiple shaped wooden display shelves.
The mirror displays beautiful age-related silvering and mottling, creating the softly timeworn, foxed appearance characteristic of an antique mirror. This natural patina adds depth, character and authenticity while creating a wonderfully atmospheric backdrop for displayed china, crystal, collectibles or decorative objects.
Flanking the center door are elaborate leaded-glass panels composed of individually beveled glass sections, arranged in an unusual stylized floral and geometric pattern. The beveled edges catch and reflect the light beautifully, while additional glass side panels allow the contents to be viewed from multiple angles.
Architectural detailing is exceptional, with spiral-turned tiger oak columns topped by ornate Corinthian-style capitals, deeply carved foliate and scrollwork decoration across the upper frieze, and carved embellishments framing the glass. Particularly distinctive are the elongated, gracefully curved lower supports extending from the columns toward the base, giving the cabinet an unusually sculptural quality.
The shaped bowfront base follows the curve of the center door and rests on substantial carved paw feet. Decorative period-style metal hardware and a key complete the piece.
A wonderful statement cabinet combining the dramatic figuring of tiger oak with bowed glass, beveled leaded glass, an aged mirrored interior, elaborate carving and an unusually architectural form.
