Each white vitreous china plate bears the bold cobalt-blue “K of P No. 22” insignia along the rim, identifying the service with Knights of Pythias Lodge No. 22. Unlike ordinary household dinnerware, pieces such as these were commissioned for institutional use in lodge halls, where they would have formed part of the table service used for dinners, banquets, meetings, and other fraternal gatherings.

The restrained white-and-cobalt palette gives the plates a remarkably clean appearance while preserving their unmistakable fraternal identity. Beyond their original function, they are appealing examples of early 20th-century American institutional china and tangible artifacts of the country's once-vibrant fraternal lodge culture.

Produced in Trenton, New Jersey, an important center of the American pottery industry, the plates are substantial vitreous china/ironstone with a glossy white glaze and cobalt-blue lodge decoration.
